This congregation of Taiwan asked us that the ecological print of construction be most attentive with the environment. Located in an urban park, this monastery takes forms of ground liftings which refer to the Meru mount. St. Jame’s Park

When considering how to replace St James’s Park’s popular Cakehouse – an everyday ‘people’s caff’ set within the sensitive picturesque Nash landscape – the architect and client faced many challenges. Despite its modest scale, the brief set surprisingly complex architectural conundrums, both in terms of the client’s operational requirements and new building’s formal obligations to the site.

Originally conceived as a café – offering local workers and passers by a casual setting for a sandwich and a cup of tea – commercial realities dictated that a more formal restaurant would also be needed. So, with this the principal challenge emerged as how to provide a flexible dual-purpose venue that, while remaining architecturally subservient to its landscape, would adequately advertise its presence to a new clientele.

The strategy therefore sought to improve the relationship between internal and external spaces; to address the potentially uneasy relationship between path and café; to provide a more clearly defined external seating area; to resolve the conflict of public and service entrances; and to develop an efficient plan arrangement that would function efficiently while responding appropriately to Nash’s formal priorities.

In opposition to the original Cakehouse – which was an object-like pavilion, circular in plan and freestanding – the new building derives its form from the geometry of the landscape, in both plan and section. At a point of convergence where two sweeping paths meet, the double curved plan creates a lozenge shaped space set within a gently rising hillock. By locking into the geometry of the lakeside path, the architects were able to justify the building’s significantly lengthened frontage, which when lined with bench seating and a covered terrace, provides a welcoming interstitial space to draw-in passers-by in a natural and unforced manner. Organised as a series of layers, the bench addresses the path, the terrace provides covered seating for 120 people, and the timber-lined interior provides space for a more formal 100-cover restaurant. Behind these public layers, the kitchen, store and service yard are all set within the new landscape hillock.

This finely crafted building – concrete and timber framed with glass and joinery lining - sits comfortably within its landscape setting. Detailed with precision however, this in undeniably a modern intervention, with fabricated steel, expressed fixings and large operable glazed openings. The new frontage, with its quiet yet rigorously ordered colonnade has already become one of the Park’s most popular meeting points. In contrast, when approached from the Mall, the new Cakehouse is virtually invisible. Appearing as little more than a gentle rising contour, the building will soon have its own roof top path, leading visitors to a new elevated vantage point, from where new and previously unattainable views over the lake and to Whitehall beyond will be unlocked.

While modest in it’s sustainability agenda, the building benefits thermally from being embedded into the ground, environmentally from passive ventilation and solar shading, and materially from using appropriately sourced Austrian Larch. Inn the Park was completed in the spring 2004, fitted out by Tom Dixon, and occupied in April 2004, and cost £2198 per sq metre.
